Going through the rigour of studying fine arts in the academic realist style, Surendran Nair, however, showed an early inclination in attempting to break away from the academic style of painting and worked on evolving a style of his own. This Untitled work is from the early decades of his career but shows the keenness of Nair creating his own visual inputs. The horizontal line in the backdrop of the nude figure, therefore, marks Nair’s quiet but firm resolve to create a personal vocabulary in art.
