Surendran Nair completed his course in printmaking from M. S. University, Baroda in 1986 and this work comes from the same period. Nair’s early career works include strong pen and ink drawings, and etchings and lithographs, featuring people from his immediate surroundings and literary heroes. Pradeep, the protagonist of this print, seems to be a friend of the artist, whom he catches admiring a vase of colourful flowers. Of special note are the strong cross-hatched lines that add gravitas to the profile of the figure.
