The fort and shore are seen from the south. Prominent within the walls of the fort are the flagstaff and the tower of St Mary’s, the oldest Anglican church in India. Madras, though built on the coast, had no proper port. Wooden boats like those in the foreground were used to transport passengers and goods from ships which stayed out at sea in the ‘roads’.
