Sushil Chandra Sen paints here an image of domesticity, of a woman who is preparing a meal for her family, or for another family where she works. The scene is set in a kitchen where we find utensils and other common objects used in this part of a home. It’s a modest setup, documenting the way Indian kitchens used to be—in a major part of the country—before spaces shrunk and altered the way homes were organised structurally. The woman in the picture, however, seems to be lost in her thoughts.
