Jamini Roy’s art’s greatest triumph was that it was created from a universal language, unbounded by region, religion, or age. Though trained in academic realism, he moved away from it, distanced himself from the revivalist movement, and created a visual vocabulary that was uniquely his own. This Untitled painting picks its subject and reference points from Western art though its rendition is purely Indian (actually, uniquely Jamini Roy’s). Cherubs can be seen on either side of a king, showering him with blessings.
