Artists like Ganesh Pyne, born in Bengal in the tumultuous years before India’s Independence, and coming of age in a newly-independent country that continued to battle socio-political upheaval, invariably had their art informed by the human suffering they saw all around. These issues became the leitmotif of Pyne’s oeuvre. “Embedded deep inside me in my subconscious… all my imageries spring from that level,” the artist had once said about his inspiration—words that hold true for the surrealist imagery in the work here, depicting a ghostly woman with a child, both looking at something macabre, perhaps, ahead of them.
