The hallmark of Ganesh Pyne’s oeuvre was poetic surrealism which he had uniquely developed as his personal style. It amalgamated in itself a variety of experiences of Pyne’s growing up years, which coincided with epochal socio-political events in India in general, and Bengal in particular. This portrait of a woman standing by a chair seems stunned in her place, perhaps over some news that is not good; the sombre atmosphere of the scene is also alluded to by the choice of dark colours for the background.
