One of the foremost and significant portraitists of Indian modern art, V. B. Pathare was known for painting in the European academic realism style but with a sensibility that was very personal, very evolved. Pathare paints in An Old Man an elderly man with flowing white beard and a blue-shaded tunic. The wrinkles and lines on his face add to the personality of the figure. Pathare keeps the background in a pastel shade of brown to accentuate the portrait further.
