V. B. Pathare was an adept watercolourist and his landscapes, similar to his portraits, were painted with the same passion, flair and finesse. Though Pathare and his wife, Prema, also an artist, painted many seascapes around the Maharashtra coast between 1939 and 1947, we are unsure if At Rest (Thal, a Fishing Harbour Near Alibaug) was painted during the same phase. The orange-pinkish glow of the sun, the reflection of the boats on the water, the people teeming towards the water’s edge, all point to Pathare’s painterly sensibilities.
