The large building in the centre of this view, according to Thomas Daniell, was the house of a Hindu merchant, situated here for convenient access to the ghats for ablutions. The merchant’s many European neighbours, engaged in the cloth trade, thought of the river more as a commercial highway, to judge from the vessels shown.
