Navjot’s artistic practice has emerged largely from her engagement with Marxist and feminist studies and continuing political activities since the Seventies. Her work is a nod to the labour class, the daily wage people in factories and their struggles. The powerlessness of these ordinary people was often depicted in Navjot’s art, including this Untitled one from the Seventies. Nonetheless, the figure in the painting has a commanding presence, giving a sense of an innate resilience and spirit. The red colour is an ode to Marxism that informed Navjot’s political stand.
