A male figure shooting an arrow at the bird, another figure in the nude, probably waiting for her lover to arrive, a rooster getting aimed at—all of these elements in this Untitled work by Badri Narayan point towards a heightened sexual imagery. The recluse artist created an impressive body of work in various genres, tackling different subjects, including narrative, which is conveyed in this painting. If this is an interface between myth and reality, we don’t know but the storytelling is what makes this work compelling.
