Watercolour wash highlighted with gold pigment on mount board
A part of his earlier oeuvre, Expectation is a true archetype of the wash technique that Kshitindranath Mazumdar inherited from Abanindranth Tagore. The single figure is placed and arranged in a plane, with the surrounding space closed off by architectural elements that add emphasis to the demure figure—a young woman apparently waiting for some event to take place. The overall painting follows the contours of Mughal miniatures, while the influence of Rajput paintings can be realised through the decorative embellishments and other details.
