Born into a family of artists, V. A. Mali studied at Sir J. J. School of Art, Bombay, and became one of the highest paid portraitists of his time. This Untitled painting features a young woman who looks straight at the viewer in a confident gaze and sports her rich brocade dupatta and her jewellery in rubies, emeralds, diamonds. The strength of the work lies in facial expressions of the subject that are captured with tremendous attention to detailing.
