Portrait of a Maharashtrian Man highlights A. M Mali’s skill as an artist and offers a study into understanding just why he is regarded as one of India’s most important modernists. Though he went into oblivion, unable to replicate similar success as his contemporaries, Mali remained true to his art, creating portraits with a ceaseless passion and a zealous spirit. He was commissioned mostly by Kolhapur royalty, but Mali created portraits that celebrated the diversity of Indian people through attire, mannerisms, a typical gaze.
