A.M. Mali was mentored by the best—trained by Abalal Rahiman, he found a job working with Raja Ravi Varma on his lithographic press. No wonder he came to master almost all genes of art practice, whether mythological paintings, portraits, landscapes or still-lifes. This lucid watercolour depicts a young woman in a saree turning to look at the viewer as she pauses in her reading, a hobby few women pursued openly at the time.
