This small format watercolour is from the early years of Devayani Krishna’s career when she was travelling and painting along with husband and artist Kanwal Krishna; the two would retreat to the Himalayas for a few years until 1952 creating a big body of work on the landscape, people and traditions of the mountain ranges. A realist landscape honest to the artist’s training at Sir J. J. School of Art, it depicts a shikara, or a houseboat on the Dal Lake—the most distinctive characteristic of Srinagar, the capital of Kashmir.
