Known for his figurative paintings, Krishen Khanna was not averse to the abstract at the start of his career, guided by his desire to emphasise the importance of brushstrokes in a painting, as depicted in this Untitled work from the 1960s. Interestingly, many artists in the decade were dabbling in the genre of abstraction, though Khanna returned to figuration as his lietmotif. In this work, the artist emphasises the texture and tactility of light and line, and, importantly, of the evocative quality of colours.
