Bhupen Khakhar, an internationally recognised artist who often created works with an autobiographical element, situating himself in many of them, dabbled in various mediums to convey his thoughts. These works were intensely personal in that they were created at a time when Indian society was even tougher in dealing with people’s personal sexual preferences than now. The narrative was clear in Khakhar’s art—it was easier for heterosexual couples to announce their relationship but those who found love as homosexuals invariably faced rejection.
