A self-taught painter, Bhupen Khakhar started painting quite late in his life but rose to prominence for the gentleness and the sensitivity with which he addressed the issues of gender and sexuality. He approached the issues of gender identity in a majority of his work, putting the figurative genre of painting in an autobiographical context. Dabbling in different mediums, Khakhar gained international prominence for the frankness and the starkly honest act of confession of his own sexual identity, which was both, provocative and moving.
