Having built up a fascinating body of work, Jitish Kallat is one of the finest contemporary artists in India who continues to gain worldwide recognition. Humiliation Tax is part of the series of the same name, and features children as central figures, most of them appearing stoic even if dejected. Since text is integral to Kallat’s art, he places in this painting a computer command, invoked when the computer system has to be rebooted. Perhaps, the artist hopes that the child will ‘escape’ the drudgery of life.
