Jitish Kallat’s work invariably juxtaposes text with images, the latter inspired by a range of influences and media—print, electronic, social media, and other popular imagery. Many times, the imagery is autobiographical, wherein the artist turns the gaze on himself for the ‘researcher's project’, as he defines his art. The usage of text is a reminder to the artist that ‘each painting necessitate[es] a bibliography’. In Yawn Garden IV, he creates impressionable patterns and motifs, and builds up a central figure who is, well, yawning.
