When India was set to host the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in 2010, showing to the world its might, everything was a struggle—stadia and facilities were delayed, the city was dug up, and the skyline of forts and monuments seemed taken over by chimneys and other symbols of twenty-first century development. Yet, there was a savage beauty to it all, as Ranbir Kaleka shows us in this painting—old ruins next to newer ones, a glorious sky, birds and beasts concerned at the goings-on, surprises at every turn.
