One of India’s brightest illustrators, Asit Kumar Haldar, here paints a scene brimming with various people—a businessman handing over money and jewels; an officer receiving the booty while his regiment looks on; the dacoits—to depict an episode of people having to ‘run before the dacoits come’. The satire is obvious. We don’t know if the dacoits will arrive. What we do know, however, is that the officer is getting what seems like a hefty bribe from the man whose family members look on.
