Bipin Behari Goswami’s modern sculptures bore an unconscious imprint of his upbringing in the culturally-charged city of Calcutta. His oeuvre inadvertently derived inspiration from familiar references of life in the streets of the bustling city. This Untitled bronze freezes a common moment from the city’s pavements where the homeless spend their days and nights hoping for a release from their condition. Here, the artist captures a woman sitting with her infant in her lap, even as one of her legs is stretched in front, rather uncannily. Goswami doesn’t miss giving the figure a saree pallu that shades her head from the scorching, tropical sun.
