A truly modern work by Bipin Behari Goswami, this Untitled bronze is a brilliant example of a harmonious merging of European sublimity with the subconscious awareness of the traditional and tribal aesthetic, evident in the way facial features have been barely hewed. It is almost a metaphor for Goswami’s career, which was influenced early on by exposure to European art but attained maturity in India. It was this ability of Goswami to seamlessly meld different currents of the practice that won him the government of India commission to restore and cast Ramkinkar Baij’s Santhal Family in bronze in 1983.
