Shanti Dave began as a commercial artist of humble means, painting banners and signboards. He studied art in Baroda, and co-founded the Baroda Group in 1957. He also experimented in different media and excelled in murals, oil and encaustic painting, and printmaking. In this mid-career painting, he depicts his dexterity in creating formal abstraction with the use of watercolour and oil on the same plane, the different character of the two lending personality to the artwork. Amorphous black forms give the blue-red background a cohesive character.
