Though Gaganendranath Tagore started painting late in life and was self-taught, he achieved success in all the mediums of art that he essayed. He was particularly adept at watercolour washes that he learnt from Japanese artists visiting Santiniketan and the Tagore’s Jorasanko ‘Thakurbari’, which was the centre of national cultural renaissance under his uncle Rabindranath Tagore. In this ethereal and landscape of mountain at dawn, Tagore adds a touch of the supernatural with the use of gold that brings alive the sun’s earliest rays on a mountain discarding the shreds of night.
