Pioneering the concept of cubism in India, Gaganendranath Tagore worked with light and space in his works, which hadn’t been used in Indian painting before. From the mid-Twenties onwards, Tagore, who was the brother of Abanindranath Tagore and the nephew of Rabindranath Tagore, created an even more complex and visually compelling post-cubist style. This work is an example of Tagore’s successful experimentation in understanding form and colour when done in the cubist mode, highlighting his unequivocal contribution to the modernist experiments in Indian art.
