Amar Nath Sehgal’s work was not only informed by western modernism but following its trajectory, also investigated figurative abstraction as his practice matured. This bronze work, Ballerina, is a deftly crafted poem that has both abstraction and figuration in its verses. While the tendril like sway of the ballerina’s body is quite evident, it successfully claims the middle ground between pure figuration and pure abstraction to depict a delicate dancer in motion. The figure of a ballerina is distinctly discernible, with the swaying form on the right appearing to be an extension of her movement.
