An Hindoo Temple, at Madura

Of all the sites that the Daniells visited in southern India, Madurai is the finest, and they devoted six plates to it – as many as they did to Madras. The first shows one of the gopurams or great gates of the seventeenth-century Minakshi Sundareshvara temple in the heart of the city.
