Painter, sculptor, poet, teacher, theoretician K. G. Subramanyan had been a young man when India was at the threshold of freedom and he had been barred from government colleges for participating in the movement. It was clear early on that his art grammar would always remain rooted in Indian ethos, drawing from the country’s diverse bag of traditions for inspiration whenever required. In this work, he creates a profile of woman in thought, or one inspiring others to think hard, in techniques and colours that are so reminiscent of various folk art practices.
