A doyen of Indian modernism, K. G. Subramanyan—artist, writer, pedagogue—was one of the most influential figures of Indian modernism, particularly of its avant garde. The women in his paintings, by and large, seem threatened and under attack. That said, they are invariably in the know of the injustice meted out to them and very often are shown fighting back and claiming their rights. Though the shocked expression of the figure makes us uncomfortable, we still wonder if this protagonist of Subramanyan’s fought back?
