Tempera on cardboard Signed in Bengali (lower right) ‘Jamini Roy’ National Art Treasure (non-exportable work)
Jamini Roy’s genius lay in creating a masterful work with just a few brushstrokes. This Untitled work exemplifies that brilliance. With a few outlines, Roy breathes life into a female form in the full bloom of youth—as suggested by her curves—reclining in the comfort of her own space, given her easy posture. Through the ingenuity of seemingly simple lines, Roy draws focus to the subject without the salaciousness associated with paintings of women—instead, suggesting his protectiveness towards her. At the same time, with the slightly raised head, he adds a sense of presence to the woman’s bearing.
