The Writers’ Building was designed in 1780 by Thomas Lyon to accommodate the junior clerks of the East India Company. This plain façade disappeared under embellishments added a hundred years later. The monument in the foreground was raised by John Zephaniah Holwell, a survivor of the infamous Black Hole of 1756, as a memorial to those who perished.
