Though not trained in any of the eminent art schools, S. G. Thakar Singh’s paintings came to be recognised for their realism. Largely a painter of landscapes and women, and recognised for his portraits of national leaders, this still-life indicates his ability to capture light and depth in his realistic paintings. The fruits in the composition are excellently rendered, and Singh builds it up using a mix of Indian and European utensils, a dark backdrop with a copper thali (large plate) making up a striking background.
