According to Dieter Wanczura, an expert on Yoshida Hiroshi who has written the book, The Complete Woodblock Prints of Yoshida Hiroshi (ABE Corporation, Japan), Taj Mahal was the main reason behind the artist’s trip to India in 1930-31. Of this seventeenth-century architectural wonder of the world, Yoshida created six different prints, capturing the monument to love at different times of the day and night, depicting the unsurpassable beauty that it truly is. In this particular work, the Taj Mahal becomes ethereal, washed as it is in the soothing blue of a full moon’s light, and also underscores the master’s dexterity in his art.
