Yoshida Hiroshi, who came to woodblock printing mid-way through his career, created an impressive body of ukiyo-e works in the Shin-Hanga style—syncretising traditional Japanese techniques with western aesthetics—and won followers worldwide for his exquisite prints. His prints stand out for their realist rendition of landscapes and architectural details as evident in this portrayal of one of the entrances punctuating the ramparts of the Ajmer fort. Awash with sunlight, it depicts a regular day in this pilgrimage city that owes its importance to the sixteenth-century shrine of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti.
