This 1934 painting, an abstract composition by Rabindranth Tagore, seems to consist of jigsaw-like forms that, however, do not come together to create any familiar image. The Nobel laureate was not interested in interpretations of his paintings, preferring his viewers to decipher the works as per their own understanding. Probably the most travelled Indian of his generation, he was able to view works of art around the world with the modernism that was previously lacking in works by Indian artists. His contribution to Indian modernism got him a posthumous honour as a National Treasure artist.
