F. N. Souza had left London and settled in New York by the time he made this Untitled work, in what looks like a remembrance of his days spent living in England and travelling across Europe. A modernist landscape, it captures the formal beauty of the European countryside. The rich crimson of the earth is evocative of terra rossa or red soil that stretches across southern Europe along the Mediterranean. It is a beautiful example of the lovely landscapes that Souza executed, most of which, however, were pushed to the side by his sexually explicit figurative works.
