For Sunil Madhav Sen, the fascination for exploring the human body in linear shapes and lines was integral and many of his paintings done in the Fifties are representative of merging those elements, evident also in Musician. Sen had a keen interest in the immense possibilities of the human anatomy, the dynamism, the structure and the schema and his experimentation in its representation is evident in this painting. Though he drew from Indian motifs and folk styles, he represented a personal language in Indian modernism.
