Trained in academic realism, N. R. Sardesai studied under the guidance of Cecil Burns at Sir J. J. School of Art, Bombay, remaining true to the practice to document India and her people. Sardesai paints in this Untitled work a male figure who is deep in meditation and prayer. The figure, sporting henna-coloured hair, sits on a sajdah prayer mat, concentrating on the beads that he holds in one hand with a religious scripture in front of him. Close to him lies a pair of khadau, or wooden slippers.
