The immediately striking feature of this Untitled painting is the colour palette that N. R. Sardesai selects to create it. The star pupil of Cecil Burns, principal of Bombay’s Sir J. J. School of Art, and a master landscapist, Sardesai became a natural documenter who captured the nation’s geography on his canvas. In this painting, he depicts a nondescript Indian town with people who seem to be going about their day. They are created as mere smudges but are vital to the integrity of the artist’s vision.
