A founding member of the Calcutta Group, Gopal Sanyal’s artistic ethos was to paint in a manner that conveyed humanitarian crisis along with the strength of the common man. On the face of it, his works appeared dark but on a closer viewing, these were drawings and paintings that depicted people in a strong, resilient manner, thus, offering hope. He was a master in creating strong, bold lines, which he had perfected in his artistic practice and revealed in his carefully chosen subjects and themes.
