When Gopal Sanyal was not painting pigs and goats, or morose-looking horses, he turned his insightful gaze upon humanity. He did quite a few paintings and drawings which show masses of people huddled together, rising against the powerful forces, clearly depicting their will to survive against all odds. The outstretched arms confirm their will to fight back till the bitter end even as their faces echo their agony. Sanyal’s fine lines, elegant, moody, fragile yet strong, become the greatest strength in this work.
