In S. H. Raza’s paintings, a mere dot becomes a space for introspection. A solid circle painted in black, its divisions created strategically, as seen in this Untitled work, becomes charged with latent forces aspiring for fulfilment. This painting, like much of his other work, is a fragment of his past, of his homeland India which he left for several decades to live in France. The colours on this canvas, though dominated by black, are rooted in Indianness to discover, ‘a whole series of different climates of thought’.
