S. H. Raza’s abstract works are mired in memories spent in the forests of his native village of Barbaria in Madhya Pradesh. Although he began his career with expressionistic land and cityscapes, his forms melted even as his colour palette, as seen in this Untitled painting, reminded one of the earthiness of his motherland. Interestingly, in the Sixties and Seventies, many Indian artists, including Raza, had turned to abstraction, influenced by their exposure to Western masters and artistic movements in the West.
