One of S. H. Raza’s earliest works, Red Trees comes from the decade when the artist shifted from India to Paris, making it his home for the next several decades. He painted many Parisian and French landscapes during this time, moving away much later to abstraction, in a language that was deeply personal. Red Trees is remarkable in that it reflects the artist’s gradual journey towards abstraction—the colour palette is changing and the artistic language is tilting towards a different approach altogether.
