Shyamal Dutta Ray was born in Ranchi, in then Bihar, but studied art in Calcutta and made it his home. The eastern metropolis was his karmabhumi—the land of his toil—whose neighbourhoods he wandered, familiarising himself with the timbre of the city, and the lives of the people behind its crumbling facades, whose glory was snatched away when the capital was shifted to New Delhi. In this sepia-toned mixed media work, Dutta Ray creates a collage of snapshots from memories of a long-gone time, pulled out with images and verses, reminiscing a reality that is now lost forever.
