That Shyamal Dutta Ray noticed things generally overlooked by the ordinary multitude is borne out by this Untitled colour intaglio work. Here, he brings focus on the half-broken shell of a nut lying by the roadside, hit by thousands of feet during the day but now in a found abode by the side. That has allowed fresh life to nurture in its belly, depicted in bright blue and cream, standing out brightly in the black-brown palette. By cleverly placing the shell in the front, the artist adds a sense of distance to the road that is visible in the background along with its kerbstones.
